To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not, rich; to listen to stars and birds, babes and sages, with open heart; to study hard; to think quietly, act frankly, talk gently, await occasions, hurry never; in a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common - this is my symphony. ~ William Henry Channing

We are all longing to go home to some place we have never been - a place half-remembered and half-envisioned we can only catch glimpses of from time to time. Community. Somewhere, there are people to whom we can speak with passion without having the words catch in our throats. Somewhere a circle of hands will open to receive us, eyes will light up as we enter, voices will celebrate with us whenever we come into our own power. Community means strength that joins our strength to do the work that needs to be done. Arms to hold us where we falter. A circle of healing. A circle of friends. Someplace where we can be free. ~ Starhawk

But we must not forget that only a very few people are artist in life; that the art of life is the most distinguished and rarest of all the arts. ~ C.G. Jung

Quotations on Elegance, Style, Events

ON ELEGANCE

Definition: el·e·gance, n.

Refinement, grace, and beauty in movement, appearance, or manners.
Tasteful opulence in form, decoration, or presentation.
Restraint and grace of style.
Scientific exactness and precision

Why has elegance found so little following? That is the reality of it. Elegance has the disadvantage, if that's what it is, that hard work is needed to achieve it and a good education to appreciate it. ~ Edsger Dijkstra

Imagine for a moment that each one of us takes only a little more care for each hour of his days, that he demands in it a little more of elegance and intensity; then, multiplying all these minute pressures toward the perfecting and deepening of each life by all the others, calculate for yourselves the gigantic enrichment, the fabulous ennobling which this process would create for human society.

Nature is always with us. It is self-supporting. In the forests of Nature we can be savages with impunity. We can likewise resolve never to cease being so, without further risk than the coming of other peoples who are not savages. But, in principle, it is possible to have peoples who are perennially primitive. Breyssig has called these peoples "the peoples of perpetual dawn," those who have remained in a motionless, frozen twilight, which never progresses towards midday.

This is what happens in the world which is mere Nature. But it does not happen in the world of civilization which is ours. Civilization is not 'just there,' it is not self-supporting. It is artificial and requires the artist or the artisan. If you want to make use of the advantages of civilization, but are not prepared to concern yourself with the upholding of civilization - you are done. Just a slip, and when you look around everything appears in its native state, just as if curtains covering pure Nature had been drawn back. The jungle is always primitive and, vice versa, everything primitive is mere jungle. ~ Jose Ortega y Gasset

Elegance of language may not be in the power of all of us; but simplicity and straight forwardness are. Write much as you would speak; speak as you think. If with your inferior, speak no coarser than usual; if with your superiors, no finer. ~ Quoted

Fashion can be bought. Style one must possess. ~ Edna Woolman Chase

A truly elegant taste is generally accompanied with an excellency of heart. ~ Henry Fielding

Deciding what to wear beyond the dress is not easy, but it makes the difference between elegance and non-elegance. The wrong accessories are the most common mistakes women make. ~ Giorgio Armani

Elegance is good taste plus a dash of daring. ~ Carmel Snow

It is in refinement and elegance that the civilized man differs from the savage. ~ Samuel Johnson

The artist who does not feel completely satisfied by elegant lines, by harmonious colors, and by a beautiful succession of chords, does not understand the art of music. ~ Camille Saint-Saëns

A designer can mull over complicated designs for months. Then suddenly the simple, elegant, beautiful solution occurs to him. When it happens to you, it feels as if God is talking! And maybe He is. ~ Leo Frankowski

What is style? For some, it’s just an advanced form of fashion, a kind of consistent rightness about clothes that distinguishes the would-be chic from the real elite. For others, it’s a more general phenomenon, a heightened awareness of decorating and entertaining as well as of clothes.
